Wondering How to be a Healthy Eater?

Eating healthy has to be a way of life. It is important to have a good understanding of what it means to eat healthy and teach this to our families. We need to understand how to read a label, what “good” versus “bad” fat means, and what good balanced nutrition is. Eating healthy has to become a habit, rather than short-lived attempts to change the way we eat.

Eating a well balanced variety of foods is your best approach to healthy eating. This means eating either 3 meals with a couple of nutritious snacks, or eating 5 smaller meals consisting of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and proteins. Your body needs a continuous supply of energy and it is best delivered in smaller portions evenly consumed throughout the day.

Variety is what healthy eaters choose for their diets, they do not limit themselves to a certain food group. For instance, a if a person is a vegetarian that doesn’t mean that they just eat vegetables, they also need to make sure they are consuming an adequate amount of protein. The same goes for meat eaters. As long as they are eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, they are most likely pretty healthy.

If you are giving your body what it needs to function well, then you most likely feel good and in control. Although a person may overeat at times, or eat foods that are less than healthy, that is not too big of a deal if it is done in moderation. Christmas can be a killer for some, but if this is the only time of year that you eat less than nutritious, you most likely are still a very healthy person.

As a healthy eater a person is in control of their overall habits. This means that you take care in choosing foods and make good judgements about eating. When you eat a big piece of chocolate cake after dinner, you may choose to then take a long walk, or when your realize that you have no fresh fruit to eat for your snacks, you take a trip to the grocery store. Checks and balances such as these help make good habits.

If you do not have control over your eating habits then you probably feel like you have poor eating habits and it doesn’t matter what you eat because “it won’t help anyway.” Other areas of your life may seem out of control as well. You need to take control of your life and examine what you can do to feel more in control.

Make sure that you are not restricting your diet in a way that may lead to bingeing. If you are bound and determined to never eat chocolate again until you lose whatever amount, you are going to begin to feel resentful. Bingeing is never good; moderation is always key.

Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you can do to enhance your body or your lifestyle. You will live longer, reduce your risk for disease, and have a lot more energy as well. If you’ve thought about making your life better, healthy eating is just the place to start. You’ll make life easier for yourself, those around you, and even your family.
